Mongolian Khan could have easily started the Caulfield Cup at even money – had it been a normal race.

Thankfully he was $5 and thanks to a gun steer from champion kiwi hoop Opie Bosson, the dual Derby winner proved too classy for his rivals.

Trip To Paris was also given an outstanding ride from Tommy Berry in defeat.

Eye catcher from a Melbourne Cup perspective was clearly Fame Game. Whatever price he is on, I’ll take it. His run was unbelievable.

The Sydney youngsters upstaged the Melbourne types once again when maiden Dawnie Perfect scored an upset win in the Ethereal Stakes (2000m), beating home Honesta and Ambience.

The first four runners across the line were all trained by Sydneysiders. Dawnie Perfect tracked up wide with cover before peeling out and grinding it out best. Honesta was strong, while I thought Ambience was a touch disappointing after getting every chance.

Sacred Eye stamped herself as the filly to beat in the Oaks with a strong win in the Caulfield Classic (2000m), aided by an absolute peach from Damien Lane.

Lane gave the filly an ideal sit behind the tempo before peeling and she did the rest, running through the line strongly. Lizard Island was excellent on speed while Etymology was a Derby eye catcher.

La Passe was a strong winner of the Blazer but on facts and figures she had no hope. Numbers aren’t everything and the Darren Weir mare proved too good for a hot field in the Tristarc Stakes (1400m), with Michelle Payne producing the ride of the day.

Solicit was excellent in defeat while Jessy Belle was huge from last. As for Catkins, well I think age is catching up with her. She is not suited on the bone dry surface but she was plain. Hazard was unlucky given she got little room at a vital stage.

Three horses to follow:
1. Fame Game
2. Artlee
3. Lady Le Fay
