Our women have always been a beacon. Sometimes not recognised in the fog that our male sports unfairly exude.

I’ve just been told its Fortnite not Fortnight. Why didn’t they just call the game Two Weeks.
Could CTE spell the end of Grassroots footy?
Fair point, more data to lead to better decisions should always be the go. In regards to CTE and its consequences specifically what i think is worrying are the potential effects that develop well after playing days are over, educational quals are attained and careers made. It’s an issue that on one hand should not be ignored but an overreaction would be detrimental too.

Hi Joy of X, i reckon the US has been quick off the mark in banning and limiting headers for certain ages because of their highly litigious society. But it doesn’t make it wrong, in fact like you allude to others including AUS should adopt similar policy. In regards to adults, i went down to the local park to watch the local team play today and i reckon heading from goal kicks and goalkeeper clearances could be looked at, but i would prefer to hear a players 2 cents on what they feel heading the ball as i only played upto the age of 14.

Hi Brainstrust, the a-league comment was more in regards to it compared to the better continental leagues in europe like the serie a and la liga as that is what i mostly watched the season gone as i only have foxtel not optus. Heading and accurate long balls are extremely technical part of the game, you’re correct there. But players in Italy and Spain are better at keeping the ball under pressure and playing a pass rather than hitting it up in the air to a contest or hitting it long. Which means less headers in open play. Admittedly i dont have stats on that so its just a feeling i get from what i have watched. And you’re absolutely right about the head collision elbow issue too, even forearms to the head when jumping look painful.
Could CTE spell the end of Grassroots footy?
Hi Alf, I too remember playing football in my pre to early teens aswell and heading the ball from goal kicks and goalkeeper clearances, and that impact especially when the ball may have been wet or overpumped. The balls these days are at least made with a nice outer lay cushion.

Cheers Dwards, its funny how our bodies have at the same time a great capacity to take punishment and heal but also so fragile. I used to and I am sure I am not the only one to worry about the effect of my playing days on my knee’s, but unlike knees brains cannot be replaced at the moment anyway.

Damn! Lets hope they never invent a real light saber, imaging the injuries from Star Wars re-enactments.

Your right Rowdy, Rugby got rid of the shoulder charge decades ago, if it was ever legal? Rugby’s issue comes at the breakdown, with the cleanout and attempted pilfer where there is and always will be incidental head contact. But league do have a ways to go as their high tackle threshold is very high compared to rugby where if you sneeze on their shoulder or above you get penalised, which RL will have to adopt.
Could CTE spell the end of Grassroots footy?
Doesn’t surprise me Dr Rotcod, the continental mindset is to play along the floor, less heading for sure. But you have to be technically proficient to play that way and the a-league doesn’t have that.
Could CTE spell the end of Grassroots footy?
Good points, the mindset the NRL and all the fans will have to be what the AFL have largely adopted in that the skill-level and openness of the game have increased to offset the decrease in the physical spectacle. And mothers are the power player in this.

Hi Rellum it is a worry. I mentioned I had 2 concussions but as barry mentioned the number of minor ones I don’t know. I remember Ian Roberts saying to Peter Fitzsimons in an interview saying that he reckons that every game had an effect regardless of getting knocked out or not, scary stuff!

Thanks Barry, your on something there with insurance premiums. They may be a factor in making weekend sport costs much greater then they already are. Last time I heard rego for park rugby in my local area was roughly $250 per year rego including socks, shorts and training shirt. Rego fees up to $500-1000 may not be out of the realms of possibility in the near future. Not sure if people can afford that?

Not a bad idea that special class of penalty. I like it! Distinguishes those infringements that are totally avoidable and unnecessary.
The NRL needs to open its eyes
Hi Paul, but the sentences have reduced. 5 weeks for hudson young at least 3 weeks too short. And the Munster incident was plain ridiculous in how they justified not sanctioning McGuire more severely.
The NRL needs to open its eyes
Sorry RAF, didn’t get that totally first time. Your absolutely right. Just like McKinnon getting seriously injured proved to be catalyst for closer policing of the wrestle will an eye getting ripped out of its socket before that occurs with facials etc. Hope not.

Rugby mate. They are a little more proactive. One season i played in the local comp, the refs put out notice a punch will automatically result in 12 weeks. There weren’t many fights brawls that year.
